Photo essay: Tour around my host city/university

Semester 2, 2015

The host city I am staying in for my study abroad exchange is Lyon. Lyon is located in the Rhône-Alps region of France. It is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseille. Lyon is known for its Fête des Lymières (festival of lights), historical architecture and food. It is impossible to do Lyon justice through just a written description; the city has many beautiful areas you have to see. So I thought I would show and tell you about a few of my favorites.

This is a picture of the Saone River; I thought I’d start with this picture as I get to see this view everyday. I walk across this bridge everyday to get to university and to get to the majority of the rest of the city.

This is a picture from the outside of Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon). Vieux Lyon is Lyon’s oldest district and one of the most beautiful areas in Lyon. It is located just 10 minutes walk from my accommodation and at the bottom of the Fourvière hill. Here there are many little shops, markets and French restaurants that specialize in the Lyonnais cuisine. This is my favourite part of Lyon!

The Basilique de Fourvière is on the hill above Vieux Lyon and has one of the best views. It is absolutely stunning on the outside and inside.

The picture above is of La Place Bellecour. It is a large square in the centre of Lyon. On the weekends there is always something going on. I have seen individual musician’s and band’s perform, a carnival, a market and a small soccer match set up. The Christmas market Lyon is setting up is also located around this area. Not only is this place beautiful it is also next to one of my favourite shopping places Hôtel de Ville. Here there are many different small street where you can find vintage shops and boutiques.

The pictures above are of the OnlyLyon sign. This is located meeting point of the two rivers in Lyon. Just behind this is a museum. Also really good if you want a touristy picture!

So these are a few of my favourite places but Lyon has many more beautiful area and sites.
