My area of research is implicit social cognition. Specifically, I am interested in the development and validation of implicit methods (e.g., affective priming, IAT, GNAT), and the use of these methods to investigate how and what people think about themselves, others, and the social world without explicitly asking them (e.g., questionnaires). Implicit methods have been found to play an important role in understanding topics such as attitudes, stereotyping and prejudice. One reason for this is because people can be reluctant to report unpopular views. More recently, these measures have been used to examine self-related topics such as implicit self-esteem and the implicit self-concept, and how these automatic or nonconscious cognitions affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
I am currently undertaking a large research project exploring implicit and explicit attitudes to a range of targets (e.g., racial groups, occupational groups, social groups defined beliefs such as environmentalists). Participation in these projects involves completing a set of individual differences measures and the attitude measures. Once you have completed the individual difference measures once, you can complete other attitude measures without repeating these. Every attitude measure you complete allow you to enter a raffle for a $50 Coles Myer gift card.
Links (NB: a $50 Coles Myer gift card to be won for each study!)
Attitudes to Aboriginal Australians
Attitudes to Asians
Attitudes to Older Adults
Attitudes to Muslims
Attitudes to weight
All participation can be completed online.
Techical instructions: Currently the program I use will not play nicely with Macs, so I appologise, but PC-based participation only at this time. The programs require java and ActiveX applets to be loaded to your computer. These are from a 100% trusted website, and will only download if you don’t have them. If you are asked to install these components, you need to say YES to complete the participation.
Some experiments require you to allow popups – and will ask you to enter a subject ID.
Finally, some experiments are LARGE and will take up to 2 minutes to load. It loads better if you have NO other applications open and can resist the urge to click or press things while it’s loading. It *will* come….
Thank you for your interest in these projects. Your time and effort is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!
Gender roles: Implicit associations between masculinity, femininity, and gender stimuli
This study is being conducted by PhD student Joel Anderson and myself. It is currently in the third phase of data. Although the experiment itself explores the implicit associations between traditionally masculine and feminine concepts, and men andwomen , this study is collecting comparison data, and you will be asked to respond to a Go/No-Go Association Task (GNAT; explained in detail should you participate) that will measure your associations between male and female, and traditional concepts of masculinity and femininity.
WHO: Everyone is encouraged to participate in this study.
WHAT: We anticipate that participation will take approximately 15 minutes of your time.

Exploring the effects of doctrinal priming on attitudes towards social objects
This study is being conducted by PhD student Joel Anderson and myself. It is being conducted with the upmost respect to religion and people’s belief. The aims of this project is to explore the currently inconsistent findings on the relationship between religion and social attitudes. Furthermore, it aims to explore the effects of reading different bible passages and whether this ‘primes’ (or puts people into a certain mind-frame) certain types of thinking, and whether this differs as a function of religious affiliation (or lack of affiliation as the case may be).
We hope that findings from the study will permit discussion of the causal effect of religion and religious cues on the positive and negative evaluations of social groups.
WHO: We are aiming to have a large sample of people who identify as Christians, and also a comparison group of people who do not endorse religious beliefs.
WHAT: We anticipate approximately 30mins of your time to complete this experiment. It will involve reading a piece of text, and reflecting upon it and then answering some questions about your religious beliefs and then ask some questions about your attitudes towards certain social groups before responding to an implicit measure called the GNAT (Go-No/Go Association Task; this will be explained in detail should you chose to participate).

My apologies I could not open the questionnare because I did not have requiered software.
Thanks for trying….. it should load if you OK it to download. It is all trustworthy. Anyway, I appreciate the effort.
Hi,
I tried to download the research program for the toys and gender roles one – but it doesn’t seem to open on Mac – is there something I can do to successfully open it?
Thanks,
Elly
Unfortunately it will only work on macs when they are running a windows style system….. or at least that is true of this version of the software. Thanks for trying.
It’s onerous to search out educated individuals on this subject, however you sound like you recognize what you’re talking about! Thanks
I searched Google for lesbian and I found your blog
