The 2015 ACU Prize for Poetry aims to support writers and to continue the tradition of the Catholic Church as a key patron of the arts. Following the success of the inaugural ACU Prize for Literature in 2013, the ACU Prize for Poetry will be awarded for outstanding poetry with the theme: Peace, Tolerance and Understanding.

“It is crucial for all of us to give new meaning to the word ‘tolerance’ and understand that our ability to value each and every person is the ethical basis for peace, security and intercultural dialogue.
A peaceful future depends on our everyday acts and gestures. Let us educate for tolerance in our schools and communities, in our homes and workplaces and, most of all, in our hearts and minds.”
Federico Mayor, Director General of UNESCO from his address at the dedication of the Museum of Tolerance, Feb. 8, 1993

Mayor’s words are as relevant now as when he spoke them more than twenty years ago. At a time of conflict across the world, much of it coming from a lack of tolerance and understanding, now, as much as any time in the past, we need to nurture fellow-feeling for those of other faiths, cultures and ethnicities. Poetry is an influential medium for fostering this understanding.

The prize is made possible through the sponsorship of the Directorate, Identity & Mission at Australian Catholic University (ACU).

Open to all citizens or permanent residents of Australia and any international student currently studying at an Australian university may also apply.

  • Opening date for entries is Monday 16th March 2015
  • Closing date for entries is Tuesday 16th June 2015.
  • The winners will be announced on Wednesday 26 August in Melbourne, in conjunction with the Melbourne Writers Festival.
