Feast Day of Saint Mary Mackillop: 8 August

August 8, 2017 – 9:30 am

On the 8th of August, we celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop, our university patron saint.

Mary MacKillop believed that we should never see a need without doing something about it, and she dedicated her life to works and values which resonate deeply with the University’s Mission.

Mary Mackillop has special significance for staff and students at ACU.
She was born directly opposite the University’s Melbourne Campus on 15 January 1842, and lived her later years on the site of the North Sydney Campus.

Co-founder of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, St Mary MacKillop is the only Australian to be canonized, making her Australia’s first saint.

ACU’s St Patrick’s and MacKillop Campuses each have a statue of St Mary MacKillop commemorating her connection with the local areas.

You can learn more about Mary MacKillop here, or use Library Search to find books, videos and articles on her life and work.

The Mackillop Campus statue depicts her in her later years, as she lived there and knew the house (now the Vice Chancellery building) and gardens.
