After getting some much needed sleep, we started out our day travelling north by coach towards the ancient city of Philippi. On our way, we stopped to visit the Baptistery of Lydia and here we had the opportunity to celebrate an outdoor Mass on the River Zygkatis, and some of us even got to witness a Greek Orthodox baptism ceremony.
From here we continued on to the ruins of the ancient city of Philippi, and spent some time tracing St Paul’s actual footsteps in this place. Words alone really can’t convey the feeling of being in places where our biblical faith story aligns so closely to historical and archeological facts. Standing at the river where Saint Paul baptised Lydia, the Seat of Judgement where he and Saint Silas was sentenced, and the prison where they were detained was just surreal.
